MINEOLA, NY — Christopher Flores, a 29-year-old resident of Long Beach, was sentenced today to five to twelve years in prison following a DWI motorcycle crash that resulted in the death of Scott Brower, a New York City public school teacher. The crash occurred in March 2022 in Rockville Centre, Nassau County.
Flores pleaded guilty on January 30, 2024, before Judge Caryn Fink to multiple charges, including Manslaughter in the Second Degree and Vehicular Manslaughter in the First Degree, both C felonies. Additional charges included Assault in the Second Degree, a D violent felony, and felonies related to driving while impaired by both alcohol and drugs.
Nassau County District Attorney Anne T. Donnelly highlighted the defendant’s previous DWI conviction in 2016, underscoring the recklessness of his actions. On the night of the crash, Flores was reportedly speeding on Merrick Road while under the influence of alcohol and marijuana, striking Brower as he crossed the street at a crosswalk. The impact threw Flores from his 2020 BMW motorcycle, which subsequently collided with another vehicle.
Scott Brower, who was less than two blocks from his home, was transported to Nassau University Medical Center where he was pronounced deceased early the following morning. Brower was remembered by DA Donnelly as a dedicated teacher and basketball coach at P.S. 20 in Flushing, Queens, and a father to a 21-month-old daughter.
The severity of the crash also left Flores with significant injuries; he was treated at Mount Sinai South Nassau Hospital. His blood tests revealed a BAC of .17% and evidence of cannabis use. Flores was arrested the day following the crash by Nassau County and Rockville Centre Police Departments. The community continues to mourn the loss of a beloved educator as Flores begins his sentence.
