LPR technology helps Chesapeake Police quickly arrest suspect in shooting

July 3, 2025

CHESAPEAKE, VA — A suspect was arrested within hours of a shooting that left one person seriously injured on June 28, thanks to investigative work and license plate recognition (LPR) technology, Chesapeake Police announced Sunday.

The shooting occurred in the 1700 block of S. Military Highway. Witnesses reported seeing the suspect flee in a gray Nissan, though no license plate was provided.

Using surveillance tools and coordination with the Norfolk Police Department, investigators identified and located the suspect vehicle. A search warrant led to the discovery of a firearm and ammunition matching evidence found at the scene.

The suspect was taken into custody shortly after.

Police credited the rapid resolution to technology and inter-agency cooperation, which allowed them to quickly identify the vehicle and connect the suspect to the crime.
