Man accused in machete and knife attacks arrested for three stabbings in DC

WASHINGTON, D.C. — A man linked to three separate stabbings in Southeast Washington was arrested and extradited this week after investigators connected him to a string of violent assaults carried out over the span of five weeks.

Key Points

  • James Gregory, 36, charged with three counts of Assault with a Dangerous Weapon
  • Victims were attacked at bus stops and during an argument on Minnesota Avenue
  • All three victims survived with non-life-threatening injuries

Pattern of stabbings spans February to March

The attacks began on February 21, when a victim waiting at a bus stop near 18th Street and Minnesota Avenue SE was slashed with a machete around 3:59 a.m. The suspect fled the scene before emergency responders transported the victim to a hospital.

On March 23, another victim was stabbed multiple times near 19th Street and Minnesota Avenue SE around 8:12 a.m. Just days later, on March 26, a third victim was stabbed following an argument in the 2200 block of Minnesota Avenue SE around 7:17 p.m. All three victims were treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

Suspect located in Maryland, now in D.C. custody

Detectives with the Metropolitan Police Department identified the suspect as 36-year-old James Gregory, who has no fixed address. A warrant was issued for his arrest, and he was later located in the custody of authorities in Prince George’s County, Maryland.

Gregory was extradited to Washington, D.C. on April 9 and charged with three counts of Assault with a Dangerous Weapon (Knife).
