June 11, 2024

NEWARK, DE — Delaware State Police have apprehended 36-year-old Larry Kelley of Newport, Delaware, following a series of crimes involving a stolen vehicle and a hit-and-run at Christiana Hospital.

The incident occurred on the morning of June 8, 2024, when Kelley, initially a patient at the hospital’s emergency department, fled the scene in an unsecured SUV parked in front of the facility. During his escape, Kelley struck a ChristianaCare constable with the vehicle, causing serious injuries to the officer before fleeing the area.

Authorities later found the stolen SUV abandoned near East Newport Pike and Forest Drive. Kelley was discovered attempting to enter a residence on Maple Hill Road and was arrested without further incident by troopers and officers from the Newport Police Department.

Investigations revealed that Kelley does not possess a valid driver’s license. Post-medical clearance, he was charged with felony assault among other offenses and was arraigned at Justice of the Peace Court 11. Kelley is currently held at Howard R. Young Correctional Institution on an $11,500 cash bond.
