Officers chased the wanted man on foot before arresting him near Pine and Bethel streets
CAMBRIDGE, MD – A wanted man took off running when Cambridge officers moved to contact him Thursday evening, leading to a foot chase that ended with his arrest and the recovery of a large quantity of crack cocaine from his hand, police said.
The encounter began at approximately 6:04 p.m. while a Dorchester County Sheriff’s Office K9 unit was heading to assist Cambridge officers with an unrelated traffic stop at Elm and Race streets.
A sheriff’s deputy spotted a man in the 600 block of Pine Street who was wanted on an active warrant through the Dorchester County Sheriff’s Office, according to Cambridge Police.
Other Cambridge officers responded and observed the man walking on the sidewalk in front of the Elks Lodge.
Police said the man fled on foot when officers got out of their patrol vehicle to contact him.
Following a foot pursuit, officers apprehended him near Pine and Bethel streets.
Police identified the man as Rhasan Jamarr Jenkins, 39, of Hurlock.
Jenkins allegedly resisted arrest, and police said his actions drew other people to the area.
During the arrest, officers recovered a plastic bag containing what police described as a large quantity of crack cocaine from Jenkins’ hand.
Police did not provide the weight of the suspected crack cocaine.
Investigators said Jenkins had an active Dorchester County Circuit Court body attachment for failure to appear.
He was charged with possession with intent to distribute a narcotic, possession of a controlled dangerous substance other than cannabis, possession of drug paraphernalia, failure to obey a lawful order, disorderly conduct and resisting arrest.
Jenkins was turned over to the Dorchester County Department of Corrections and held without bond, according to police.
The charges are accusations, and Jenkins is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
