Man Killed by Lightning While Trying to Warn Children on Beach of Storm in Seaside Park

SEASIDE PARK, NJ—A tragic incident unfolded on a Seaside Park beach when Patrick Dispoto, a local weather enthusiast from Manchester, lost his life while attempting to warn beachgoers of an approaching storm. Known for his keen interest in meteorology, DeSoto noticed a menacing cloud formation, characterized by what appeared to be a funnel, signaling imminent danger.

Compelled to ensure the safety of others, Dispoto told his family he would quickly move to alert a group of children playing on the sand. His son, Cole Dispoto, recounted his father’s last words to WCBS, expressing a determination to prevent any harm.

It is believed that Dispoto was struck by lightning during his brave endeavor. According to his family, the lightning likely hit nearby, and due to the conductivity of the sand, the electrical charge killed Dispoto.

The town of Seaside Park has been enhancing safety measures with new technology that detects thunderstorms within a set radius and activates warning sirens to advise beachgoers to seek shelter. This incident has only intensified local calls for heightened awareness and quicker responses when storms approach.

A non-denominational memorial gathering will be from 2:00-5:00 PM on Sunday June 30th, at Oliverie Funeral Home 2925 Ridgeway Rd Manchester, NJ, 08759.
