PHILADELPHIA, PA — Police are searching for a suspect involved in a burglary at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Center City, where a valuable religious artifact was stolen over the weekend.

According to the Central Detective Division, the break-in occurred on January 11 at approximately 1:04 a.m. when the suspect forced entry into the church at 21 S. 13th St. by smashing a stained-glass window. Once inside, the individual stole a gold crown adorned with gems from a statue of the Virgin Mary.

Authorities released surveillance footage showing the suspect, described as a male wearing a facemask, a black jacket, grey pants, and red or pink sneakers.

No injuries were reported, but the theft of the crown has left parishioners and church officials shaken.
