Maryland dad turns birthday numbers into $50K Pick 5 jackpot during gas stop

A quick lottery ticket purchase at a Rosedale Exxon became a life changing family surprise

ROSEDALE, Md. — A Maryland restaurant owner celebrating his birthday months later struck it big after using personal numbers tied to a gift from his mother to win $50K on a Pick 5 ticket.

The Rosedale man claimed the prize Wednesday at Maryland Lottery headquarters after matching the winning Pick 5 numbers drawn April 12.

According to Maryland Lottery officials, the winner was getting gas at the Golden Ring Exxon at 8605 Philadelphia Road in Rosedale when he spotted a birthday gift his mother had given him earlier in the year.

That moment convinced him to buy a Pick 5 ticket using his birthday numbers, 32370.

The player purchased both a $1 straight bet ticket and a $1 box ticket for that evening’s drawing before heading to work.

Later that night, his wife and daughter checked the numbers for him and delivered the shocking news.

“They called and said I won $50,000,” the winner told lottery officials.

At first, the restaurant owner did not believe them.

But after checking the drawing results himself, he discovered he had matched the numbers exactly for the $50,000 straight win. His additional box ticket also produced another $800 prize.

The winner said he immediately secured the tickets in a safe before contacting the store where he bought them.

Lottery officials said the player plans to place the winnings into a college fund for his children.

Golden Ring Exxon will receive a $500 retailer bonus for selling the winning ticket.
