CAMBRIDGE, MD – A 30-year-old man wanted on an out-of-state warrant was taken into custody late Friday night after a two-hour standoff with police inside a Cambridge apartment complex. The incident began around 9:23 p.m. in the 500 block of Glenburn Avenue, when officers from the Cambridge Police Department and the Dorchester County Sheriff’s Office K9 Unit arrived to serve an extraditable warrant on Delorenze Rushaan Dukes, who was wanted in Delaware for stalking, harassment, and multiple counts of felony breach of the peace.
Upon arrival, officers located the vehicle Dukes had been operating and attempted to contact him at his apartment door. Police reported hearing movement and furniture being shifted inside, but Dukes refused to answer. At one point, officers saw him appear briefly at a rear window before retreating out of view. As a safety precaution, neighboring tenants were evacuated while police continued attempts to negotiate Dukes’ surrender.
Specialized units from the Cambridge Police Department, including the Special Tactical Response Team, Criminal Investigation Division, and Drone Unit, were called to assist. After obtaining a search and seizure warrant, officers breached the apartment at approximately 11:57 p.m. and deployed a drone inside, which located Dukes lying face down on a bed. Through the drone’s communication system, officers ordered Dukes to exit with his hands up. He complied and was taken into custody without further incident.
Dukes was processed at the Cambridge Police Department and later turned over to the Dorchester County Department of Corrections on a temporary commitment. He faces multiple charges, including fugitive from justice out of Delaware, failure to obey a lawful order, obstructing and hindering, resisting arrest, and disturbing the peace.
The Cambridge Police Department credited the Dorchester County Sheriff’s Office and Dorchester County Emergency Services for their assistance during the operation.
