PIKESVILLE, MD—The Maryland State Police announced plans to ramp up enforcement of impaired, aggressive, and distracted driving laws through the Independence Day weekend, starting Wednesday. This initiative, which spans from July 3 to July 8, is a part of a coordinated effort across all 23 state barracks, supported by funding from the Maryland Department of Transportation Motor Vehicle Administration’s Highway Safety Office.
Troopers will engage in saturation patrols targeting areas known for traffic-related incidents and will enforce laws vigorously to reduce alcohol-related injuries and fatalities. The State Police Impaired Driving Reduction Effort (SPIDRE) team, a unit specifically trained to detect and apprehend impaired drivers, will be actively involved, funded by a grant from the Maryland Highway Safety Office.
Across Maryland’s regions, troopers will conduct high-visibility enforcement:
- Eastern Region: Routes 50, 13, 413, and various work zones will see intensified patrols.
- Central Region: Interstates 495, 70, and 695 will be key focus areas, along with a DUI checkpoint on MD Route 650 by the Rockville Barrack in collaboration with Montgomery County Police.
- Western Region: Enforcement will increase along interstates 68, 70, and Route 219.
- Northern Region: Efforts will concentrate on routes known for higher impaired driving incidents, including Routes 22, 24, 40, 1, and 213.
- Southern Region: Patrols will cover Route 50 and interstates 695, 97, as well as other state roads.
The Maryland State Police also provided tips for those attending or hosting July 4th events, emphasizing the importance of designating sober drivers, utilizing public transportation, and ensuring guests have safe transportation options. The initiative aims to make holiday travel safer and prevent traffic-related incidents during one of the busiest travel times of the year.
