Maryland Toddler Accidentally Shoots Herself With Loaded Gun

GAITHERSBURG, MD — A tragic incident occurred in Montgomery Village where a 3-year-old girl accidentally shot herself. The event took place inside an apartment on the 18700 block of Walkers Choice Road on Tuesday, June 4, 2024, at approximately 12:09 p.m.

Responding to the report of an injured child, officers from the Montgomery County Department of Police 6th District quickly arrived at the scene. The child was subsequently transported by Montgomery County Fire Rescue to a local hospital, where she underwent surgery.

During the investigation, 6th District investigators secured a search warrant for the apartment, discovering a .40 caliber privately manufactured firearm inside.

A 15-year-old, who does not reside at the apartment, was charged with possessing ammunition by a prohibited person. The juvenile has been released to his parents.

The investigation into how the child accessed the firearm is ongoing.
