Maryland Woman Pleads Guilty to Trafficking Fentanyl in West Virginia

March 31, 2024

ELKINS, WV – Daniela Marie Giancoli, 34, from Baltimore, Maryland, has entered a guilty plea for her role in a conspiracy to distribute fentanyl in West Virginia. The admission was part of a broader investigation into drug trafficking activities in Grant County and surrounding areas.

Court documents reveal that Giancoli was involved in supplying significant quantities of fentanyl, with investigators seizing nearly 9,000 pills of the drug, totaling more than two kilograms. Giancoli, alongside co-defendant Michael Matthews, orchestrated the operation from their Baltimore apartment, distributing the drugs to over ten dealers.

Facing a maximum sentence of 20 years in federal prison, Giancoli awaits sentencing. The court will consider the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines among other factors to determine the final sentence. Matthews, who pleaded guilty in 2023, is scheduled for sentencing in April.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Stephen Warner, highlighting the continued efforts to combat the opioid crisis and its spread across state lines.
