Police say gunman jumped pharmacy counter before fleeing with prescription drugs

WASHINGTON, DC — A masked man accused of brandishing a gun, vaulting over a Northwest DC pharmacy counter and fleeing with stolen prescription drugs saw his escape unravel when his vehicle crashed and he ran from the wreck, leading to his arrest on 11 charges, according to the Metropolitan Police Department.

The armed robbery unfolded at approximately 6:22 p.m. Friday at a pharmacy in the 1800 block of Columbia Road NW.

Police said the suspect entered the business wearing a black ski mask and demanded prescription medications.

The suspect then jumped over the counter and made additional demands while displaying a firearm, according to MPD.

He fled the pharmacy in a vehicle with stolen prescription drugs, police said.

Officers responding to the robbery later located the suspect after his vehicle crashed in the 1500 block of North Capitol Street NW. Police said the suspect left the vehicle and fled on foot.

A firearm and prescription drugs were recovered at the crash scene, according to MPD.

No bystanders were injured, and police reported no injuries involving occupants of other vehicles in connection with the crash.

MPD identified the arrested suspect as 25-year-old Jamari Brighthaupt of Southeast DC.

Brighthaupt was charged with robbery while armed with a gun, possession of a firearm during a crime of violence, carrying a pistol without a license, possession of an unregistered firearm, possession of unregistered ammunition, possession of a large-capacity ammunition feeding device and felon in possession of a firearm.
