Middletown woman charged in Newark home invasion, pepper spray assault on 8 people

Delaware woman pepper-sprays crowd during home invasion after street fight in Newark.

NEWARK, DEL. — A Middletown woman was arrested after she allegedly forced her way into a Newark home and sprayed multiple people with a chemical irritant during an early morning altercation earlier this month, authorities said.

Newark Police said officers responded to the area of East Main Street and Choate Street around 1:20 a.m. on April 5 following reports of a fight. Upon arrival, officers learned that multiple individuals had been exposed to what was believed to be pepper spray. The suspect had fled the scene.

Investigators determined that a confrontation had taken place on Choate Street, after which several people remained in the area arguing. During that time, a woman approached a home, forced her way past a resident trying to block her entry, and sprayed pepper spray inside the residence, affecting several victims.

After being forced out of the home, the suspect allegedly turned and sprayed others outside before fleeing in a vehicle, traveling the wrong way down the one-way street. A total of eight individuals reported symptoms consistent with chemical exposure, police said.

Through surveillance footage from the City’s Public Safety Camera System, detectives identified the suspect’s vehicle and traced it to London Marie Young, 27, of Middletown. A warrant was issued, and Young surrendered to authorities on April 19.

Suspect faces multiple assault and burglary charges

Young has been charged with first-degree home invasion burglary resulting in physical injury, eight counts of second-degree assault for the use of disabling chemical spray, third-degree assault, and driving the wrong way on a one-way road.

She was arraigned in Justice of the Peace Court #11 and released on $40,100 unsecured bail. A No Contact Order was also issued preventing her from contacting the victims involved in the incident.

Authorities say the investigation is closed following Young’s arrest and charging.
