Mikie Sherill credits $10 million net worth increase since taking office as being really lucky

MORRISTOWN, N.J. — Rep. Mikie Sherrill responded to questions this week regarding a reported $7 million increase in household stock assets since taking office, attributing the gain to her and her husband being “really lucky” and coming from modest beginnings.

Sherrill, who represents New Jersey’s 11th Congressional District and is currently running for governor, was questioned about reports from conservative-leaning outlets Newsmax and the Washington Free Beacon alleging that her household assets grew from approximately $1.3 million–$4 million in 2019 to $4 million–$13 million by 2024.

During an interview, when asked if she had personally made $7 million in stock trades, Sherrill responded, “I don’t believe I did, but I’d have to go see what that was alluding to.” She went on to explain that the estimate was based on “the average of the two broad asset categories.”

Sherrill noted that she and her husband, both military veterans, came from “very middle-class families,” adding, “My parents were the first in their family to go to college, and his were both teachers. And then we both went into the military. And afterwards, he got a good job. We’ve been really lucky.”

Financial disclosures under scrutiny as gubernatorial race ramps up

Sherrill’s financial disclosures have drawn attention as she seeks to lead New Jersey and oversee its $58 billion state budget. Under federal law, members of Congress must disclose financial assets and transactions, but exact figures are often reported in broad ranges.

The congresswoman also emphasized that she no longer holds individual stock investments and supports reform: “I’m totally out of individual stocks. Like I said, I think every member of Congress should be.”

Sherrill has not provided a detailed breakdown of the transactions or assets in question and has not been accused of any legal or ethics violations.
