Georgia man extradited in stolen check case tied to Yancey County business
BURNSVILLE, NC – A Georgia man is being held on a 250000 dollar bond after authorities say he altered and duplicated a business check and attempted to deposit it using a fictitious name.
Maucarie Devaghun Holmes, 24, of Fitzgerald, Georgia, was arrested following an investigation into a fraudulent check linked to a Yancey County business, according to the Yancey County Sheriff’s Office.
Investigators allege the suspect altered and duplicated a business check, then attempted to deposit the fraudulent check into a bank account opened under a false identity.
Detective CJ Wilson identified the suspect through investigative technology, officials said. With assistance from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, Holmes was located in Newton County, Georgia, taken into custody on North Carolina charges and extradited to Yancey County.
Holmes is currently being held at the Yancey County Detention Center on a charge of felony identity theft under a 250000 dollar bond.
Authorities said the investigation reflects coordination between agencies in multiple states. The case remains under review.
