Nellie Who New Jersey Dems Pick Replacement for Deceased Congressman on November Ballot

In a swift and decisive move, New Jersey Democrats have chosen state Sen. Nellie Pou to replace the late Rep. Bill Pascrell on the November ballot for the 9th Congressional District. Pou, who has been a prominent figure in New Jersey politics, secured the nomination after receiving endorsements from key party leaders and seeing her potential rivals step aside earlier in the week. The selection took place at a special party convention on Thursday night, just days after Pascrell, a longtime congressman, passed away at the age of 87.

Governor Phil Murphy, a Democrat, threw his support behind Pou on Wednesday, calling her the ideal candidate to carry on Pascrell’s legacy. He praised Pou for her commitment to building a more equitable and inclusive New Jersey, values that Pascrell championed throughout his career.

Pou’s nomination is particularly significant as it positions her to make history as the first Hispanic woman elected to Congress from New Jersey. The 9th District, which includes areas across the Hudson River from Manhattan, has a significant Hispanic population, making Pou a strong representative for the community. The district is also solidly Democratic, with Joe Biden having won it by a substantial margin in the 2020 presidential election, which bodes well for Pou’s chances against Republican nominee Billy Prempeh.

Rep. Bill Pascrell, who served in Congress for over two decades, was remembered fondly at his funeral Mass on Wednesday. The ceremony, held at the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist in Paterson, was attended by numerous Democratic officials, including Governor Murphy, former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, and Rep. Jamie Raskin, reflecting the deep respect and admiration he garnered throughout his career.

With the nomination finalized, Pou is now set to campaign for the November 5th election, where she is widely expected to continue Pascrell’s work and become a trailblazing figure in New Jersey’s political landscape.
