SEASIDE PARK, NJ – Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission (ASMFC) Striped Bass Board took decisive action on May 2, 2023, to address the declining striped bass population by introducing emergency measures aimed at stock rebuilding. The Board unanimously approved the implementation of a new size slot limit for recreational striped bass fishing along the coast.
Following suit, the NJ Marine Fisheries Council (MFC) held a vote on June 20, 2023, to adopt the same regulations in order to maintain compliance with the ASMFC. This coordinated effort between the two regulatory bodies underscores the urgency of the situation and the commitment to preserving the striped bass population.
Effective from July 2, 2023, the new striped bass regulations will include a size slot limit of 28″ to 31″ for catching a maximum of one fish in all state waters. These regulations will apply to the Atlantic Ocean within 0 to 3 miles from the shore, with no closed season. In all other marine waters, the fishing season will be open from March 1 to December 31.
However, there will be a temporary closure in the Delaware River and its tributaries. Starting from April 1 until May 31, fishing for striped bass in this area, spanning from the Calhoun St. Bridge in Trenton to the Salem River and its tributaries, will be prohibited.
Notably, the emergency measures will not affect the Striped Bass Bonus Program (SBBP), which will continue to operate under the existing regulations. The SBBP allows anglers to catch one fish measuring at least 24″ but less than 28″ in length. The season for the SBBP will remain open from May 15 to December 31.
Anglers are advised to take note that the printed NJ Recreational Regulation Cards and Marine Digests for 2023 do not reflect the updated striped bass regulations.
