New Jersey AG Investigates Officer-Involved Shooting in Keansburg

TRENTON, NJ — The New Jersey Attorney General’s Office is conducting an investigation into an officer-involved shooting that took place on May 27, 2024, in Keansburg, Monmouth County. The incident occurred during a welfare check at a residence on Seabreeze Way.

At approximately 1:07 p.m., officers from the Keansburg Police Department responded to the location. Upon entering the home, they encountered an adult male civilian armed with numerous weapons and operating a chainsaw. According to reports, the situation escalated when the individual approached the officers with the running chainsaw. In response, one officer deployed a taser while another discharged his service weapon, striking the man.

Emergency medical personnel and officers provided immediate medical aid at the scene. The injured man was subsequently transported to Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune, where he is currently listed in critical but stable condition. The identities of the officers and the civilian involved have not been released.

Under a 2019 law (N.J.S.A. 52:17B-107(a)(2)), the Attorney General’s Office is required to investigate any death that occurs during an encounter with law enforcement or while the decedent is in custody. This incident, involving serious bodily injury likely to result in death, falls under Attorney General Law Enforcement Directive 2019-4, which mandates that the Office of Public Integrity and Accountability lead the investigation. The case will be presented to a grand jury to determine if the actions of the involved officers warrant an indictment.
