New Jersey Bans Loud Cars, Boom Parties

By Charlie Dwyer / August 8, 2023

TRENTON, NJ – Acting Governor Nick Scutari approved legislation on Monday addressing noise violations from motor vehicles.

The law, S-3131/A-4686, defines “nuisance motor vehicles” and establishes penalties for them, with a particular focus on vehicles playing music at high volumes.

The legislation was driven by community concerns regarding “boom parties,” where vehicles with powerful sound systems play music at disruptively high volumes.

Acting Governor Scutari emphasized the significance of maintaining community peace, and the law sets a sound limit that can be clearly heard from a distance of 50 feet or more from the vehicle.

Under the newly signed law, first-time offenders will face a fine between $250 to $500. A second violation will attract a fine ranging from $500 to $750, while third and subsequent offenses will lead to fines between $750 and $1,000, along with two motor vehicle penalty points.
