TRENTON, N.J. — New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy currently finds himself at odds with ICE, the U.S. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement agency, but on Thursday, it’s not Tom Homan the governor will be dealing with.
Murphy and the state will be dealing with ice, as in frozen water this time.
A winter storm is expected to bring snow, sleet, and freezing rain across New Jersey beginning Tuesday night, creating hazardous driving conditions for the morning commute. Officials are urging residents to exercise caution on the roads as black ice poses a significant threat.
The National Weather Service in Mount Holly warned that a wintry mix would move in overnight, with freezing rain and light snow transitioning to rain by Thursday morning. “Locations from around the Philly metro and north should expect an icy morning commute,” the agency posted on X, formerly Twitter.
Governor Phil Murphy advised drivers to be prepared for slippery roads and reduced visibility. “We are expecting freezing rain and light snow starting tonight and continuing into Thursday,” Murphy said in a post on X. “Be cautious of slippery roads during the morning commute.”
The New Jersey Department of Transportation has issued commercial vehicle travel restrictions on multiple interstate highways starting at midnight. The agency also cautioned that untreated surfaces may develop black ice, increasing the risk of accidents. “If you have to drive, plan extra travel time, obey posted speed limits, and leave plenty of space between vehicles,” NJDOT stated.
With freezing rain and snow expected to make travel treacherous, officials are urging residents to stay off the roads if possible and to prepare for a dangerous Wednesday morning commute.
