NEW JERSEY – Amid concerns for the safety of loved ones abroad, there are rising apprehensions within the local Jewish community of New Jersey regarding their well-being during the High Holidays.
In response to these concerns, there has been ongoing communication with the 21 County Prosecutors and law enforcement heads throughout the state.
Although there are currently no credible threats identified, a proactive approach is being taken. Law enforcement will enhance patrols around vulnerable spots, focusing primarily on places of worship linked to both the Jewish and Islamic communities. These measures are precautionary to ensure the safety of the communities. Additionally, New Jersey residents are being urged to maintain heightened alertness and to promptly report any suspicious activities to local authorities.
Engagement with Jewish community leaders is ongoing to foster collaborative efforts in ensuring the safety of New Jersey residents. In the previous month, a statewide conference was held that gathered law enforcement officials, Jewish faith leaders, and representatives from the interfaith community.
The aim was to ensure that sacred Jewish rites could be observed without any disruptions, especially from those driven by hate. Even though the aspiration is to celebrate the High Holidays without the overshadowing fear, the increasing trend of extremism and antisemitism nationwide mandates unwavering vigilance, particularly during this festive period for the Jewish populace.
New Jersey’s strength lies in its rich diversity.
The state has consistently demonstrated that its cultural and ethnic differences contribute to its resilience and unity. Emphasizing this unity, the state reiterates that hate targeted at one group is essentially an attack on all. It remains a collective responsibility to prevent the spread of hatred, intolerance, or violence within the state’s borders.
