TRENTON, N.J. – A new resolution introduced in the New Jersey Senate formally condemns Hinduphobia and anti-Hindu bigotry, recognizing the contributions of the Hindu American community and declaring the state a welcoming place for diversity.
Senate Concurrent Resolution 104 (SCR104), introduced on May 9, 2024, by Senators Vin Gopal (D-11) and Raj Mukherji (D-32), denounces prejudice against Hindus and acknowledges their impact on various industries, including medicine, science, technology, and academia. The measure also highlights the widespread influence of Hindu cultural traditions such as yoga, Ayurveda, and meditation in American society.
The resolution defines Hinduphobia as “a set of antagonistic, destructive, and derogatory attitudes and behaviors towards Sanatana Dharma (Hinduism) and Hindus that may manifest as prejudice, fear, or hatred,” citing documented instances of hate crimes targeting Hindu Americans.
“The State of New Jersey condemns Hinduphobia, anti-Hindu bigotry and intolerance, and declares the State of New Jersey as a place that welcomes the diversity brought by Hindu Americans,” the resolution states.
If adopted, copies of the resolution will be sent to the Governor of New Jersey, members of Congress from the state, and the Hindu American Foundation in Washington, D.C. The resolution does not create new legal penalties but serves as a formal statement against discrimination.
