TRENTON, N.J. — The New Jersey General Assembly has introduced a resolution calling on the federal government to launch a thorough investigation into a surge of unidentified drone sightings reported across the state. Lawmakers say the incidents have caused widespread concern and raised questions about public safety and national security.
Assembly Resolution No. 173, sponsored by Assemblyman Christopher P. DePhillips (R-40) and Assemblyman Louis D. Greenwald (D-6), cites reports of drones flying near critical infrastructure, military installations, and President-elect Donald Trump’s residence at Trump National Golf Club in Somerset County. Witnesses have included law enforcement, military personnel, and private citizens, with sightings reported in over a dozen counties.
“The volume of drone sightings and their proximity to sensitive areas have left residents alarmed and fearful,” the resolution states. It highlights the limited ability of state and local authorities to investigate, given that airspace regulation falls under the jurisdiction of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).
Federal officials have downplayed the threat, maintaining that many sightings are likely lawful manned aircraft or other explainable phenomena. However, this position contrasts with statements from military officials who have confirmed incidents involving drones near military sites. Lawmakers argue that the federal government’s response has been insufficient in addressing public concerns.
“The federal government has an obligation to safeguard the security of the residents of New Jersey against a potential national security threat,” the resolution asserts, urging officials to provide timely updates to state authorities and launch a rigorous, ongoing investigation.
The resolution also requests that copies be sent to President Joe Biden, the Secretary of Defense, the Secretary of Homeland Security, congressional leaders, and New Jersey’s congressional delegation.
As unexplained drone activity continues to spread across New Jersey, the state legislature has joined the growing chorus of voices calling for answers from federal authorities.
