New Jersey mayor raises alarm over missing radioactive material, port concerns and drone sightings

BELLEVILLE, N.J. – Belleville Mayor Michael Melham is heightening concerns following recent drone sightings and reports of missing radioactive material in New Jersey, pressing for transparency from federal and state officials.

The mayor disclosed during a recent interview that multiple large drones have been observed flying in grid-like patterns, suggesting they may be searching for something. “We were told by our state police that we have assets over our critical infrastructure,” Melham said, adding that the activity coincides with a reported loss of radioactive material earlier this month.

According to the mayor, the missing shipment, which was damaged and found empty upon arrival, disappeared in New Jersey on December 2 during transit. Officials have not confirmed whether the material poses an immediate threat, but Melham said its absence raises questions about the drone operations being reported across the state.

“This lack of transparency… is doing nothing but fueling conspiracy theories online,” Melham stated, further criticizing state and federal officials for offering little information to local leaders, despite growing public concern.

Melham referenced a call with the White House where mayors were told that the sightings were misidentifications, but he insisted that credible evidence points to active drones. “Tell us they’re ours. Tell us that they’re protecting us. And tell us what the threat is,” he said.

The incidents, which began roughly four weeks ago, have now been reported in Pennsylvania, as officials continue to investigate.
