TRENTON, N.J. – Drivers should expect delays Tuesday morning on several of New Jersey’s busiest roadways, with congestion affecting the Garden State Parkway, New Jersey Turnpike, Interstate 287, and major crossings into New York City.
The heaviest delays on the Garden State Parkway are reported northbound between Exit 89C (Lakewood Airport Road) in Lakewood Township and Exit 90 (Chambers Bridge Road) in Brick Township, where traffic is backed up for approximately two miles due to heavy volume. Southbound traffic is also slow between Exit 149 in Bloomfield and Exit 145 at Interstate 280 in East Orange, with another two-mile backup.
Turnpike and Interstate Delays
Motorists using the New Jersey Turnpike are encountering slow traffic on both the Western and Eastern Spurs approaching Newark. The Western Spur has a two-mile delay northbound from the Southern Mixing Bowl to Interstate 280, while the Eastern Spur is experiencing a two-and-a-half-mile backup along the same stretch. All lanes remain open.
Interstate 287 is also seeing typical rush-hour congestion. Northbound delays extend from River Road in Piscataway Township to Exit 12 in Franklin Township, while an additional slowdown is reported between the New Jersey Turnpike and Exit 3 at New Durham Road in Edison Township.
Hudson River Crossings Remain Busy
Travel into New York City continues to be slower than normal Tuesday morning. Both the center and south tubes of the Lincoln Tunnel are reporting approximately 15-minute travel times from New Jersey Turnpike Exit 16E to Manhattan.
The Holland Tunnel is also seeing delays, with a 15-minute trip from either New Jersey Turnpike Exit 14C or Route 139 at Tonnelle Circle into Lower Manhattan.
Drivers approaching the George Washington Bridge should also expect extra travel time. Eastbound traffic is moving at approximately 15 minutes on the lower level and 20 minutes on the upper level from Interstate 80 to the Alexander Hamilton Bridge. Westbound traffic on both bridge levels is experiencing roughly 15-minute delays along the Cross Bronx Expressway.
Traffic conditions remain subject to change throughout the morning commute as congestion shifts across the state’s highway network. Motorists are encouraged to allow extra travel time and check real-time traffic conditions before departing.
