TOMS RIVER, N.J. — A U.S. Navy sailor has been reunited with his dog, Archie, after a public appeal went viral, prompting a resolution between the returning servicemember and the family that had been caring for the pet during his deployment.
Petty Officer Paulo Silva, who returned to New Jersey following active duty aboard the USS Harry S. Truman, discovered upon arrival that his dog had been rehomed without his knowledge. In response, he issued a public letter appealing for the return of Archie, whom he described as “my heart, my companion, and a piece of my soul.”
Silva’s appeal garnered widespread attention online and in the local community. He expressed gratitude toward the family that had cared for Archie, acknowledging their role in keeping the dog safe during his absence. “I want to sincerely thank the family who has been caring for him during this time,” Silva wrote in a public statement.
The family agreed to return Archie, and the handover occurred peacefully. In appreciation, Silva arranged for the family to receive a specially trained golden retriever puppy from a breeder that works with special needs households. The breeder has offered to donate the puppy free of charge.
Silva emphasized the importance of ending negative backlash directed at the family.
“I want to respectfully ask that everyone stop any further harassment, threats, or negative actions directed at the family,” he said. “The family is not at fault, and… it’s time to put this chapter behind us.”

Support for Silva came from multiple directions, including the Toms River Police Department and local nonprofit Pints 4 Pets, which helped raise awareness of the situation.
The resolution brings an end to a weeks-long dispute that began when Silva learned Archie had been rehomed without his involvement. He had originally believed the dog would be in trusted care during his deployment and only found out about the rehoming after returning home.
Silva’s efforts to recover Archie gained momentum after he published a heartfelt letter detailing the bond between him and the dog. The message resonated with members of the military community and pet advocates nationwide.
With Archie now home, Silva has turned his attention to healing and reconnecting with his pet. He credited the local community for supporting him through what he described as an emotional ordeal.
