New Jersey striped bass limit far exceeds federal emergency limit

TOMS RIVER, NJ – New Jersey Fishermen will not be affected by a new federal law that imposes strict new standards on striped bass fishing. That’s because New Jersey’s striped bass limit already far exceeds a new federal law imposed as an emergency act to replenish stocks.

The New Jersey Marine Fisheries Council has scheduled a webinar meeting on Tuesday, June 20, 2023, at 6:00 pm to discuss proposed regulatory changes for the recreational striped bass fishery. This meeting comes in the wake of emergency regulations implemented by the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission in May, aimed at preventing overfishing and promoting the rebuilding of striped bass stocks along the coast.

Currently, New Jersey’s regulations allow for the harvest of one striped bass measuring between 28 inches and less than 38 inches. However, the new regulations, which must be adopted by all states by July 2, 2023, call for a one fish limit and a slot size limit of 28 inches to less than 31 inches. States that fail to implement these regulations may face a federally imposed moratorium. It’s important to note that these emergency regulations do not impact New Jersey’s Striped Bass Bonus Program. However, if the state is found to be non-compliant, the program itself would be subject to the moratorium.

During the upcoming meeting on June 20, the Marine Fisheries Council will carefully review available data and receive a report from the Striped Bass Committee and advisors. This information will help inform the council’s decision-making process regarding the proposed regulatory changes for the recreational striped bass fishery in New Jersey. The council aims to strike a balance between conservation efforts and ensuring sustainable fishing opportunities for recreational anglers.
