New Jersey to add hunger 911 emergency phone line

TRENTON, NJ – Hunger relief could be a phone call away for many in New Jersey in the near future.

A bill introduced in New Jersey aims to establish a toll-free food rescue telephone hotline within the Office of the Food Security Advocate. The purpose of this hotline is to receive and respond to calls from individuals or organizations interested in donating large quantities of food. The hotline will provide information and direct callers to appropriate food banks and community resources, facilitating the delivery of food to the designated locations.

Additionally, the bill requires the Food Security Advocate to conduct a public awareness campaign using various media channels such as television, radio, print, the internet, and social media. The objective of this campaign is to inform the public about the availability and purpose of the food rescue hotline, encouraging individuals and organizations to participate in food donation efforts.

If enacted, this legislation would establish a centralized system to streamline the process of food rescue and redistribution, ensuring that donated food reaches those in need more efficiently. The public awareness campaign would help raise awareness about the hotline and encourage widespread participation in food donation initiatives across the state.

It’s important to note that this bill is currently under consideration and has not yet become law in New Jersey.
