TRENTON, N.J. – The New Jersey State Police has named Detective Sergeant Michael Gallant of the Official Corruption North Unit as the 2025 Trooper of the Year for leading a multi-year investigation that dismantled the state’s faction of the Lucchese Crime Family.

Colonel Patrick J. Callahan announced the honor, citing Gallant’s exceptional leadership during a two-year probe known as La Cosa Nostra. The investigation uncovered an extensive criminal operation involving illegal gambling, racketeering, and money laundering that stretched across multiple North Jersey communities.

Under Gallant’s direction, investigators exposed a complex network of underground poker clubs, secret gaming rooms inside restaurants, a high-tech online sportsbook, and numerous shell companies designed to conceal illegal profits. Search warrants were executed at sites in Totowa, Garfield, Woodland Park, Paterson, and at several residences connected to the operation.

The probe resulted in the arrest and indictment of 42 alleged associates tied to the Lucchese network, including high-ranking figures identified as George “The Neck” Zappola, Joseph “Big Joe” Perna, John Perna, and Wayne Cross.

Colonel Callahan praised Gallant’s “patience, precision, and unwavering commitment,” calling the case a model of professional integrity and investigative excellence. “Detective Sergeant Gallant’s remarkable efforts exemplify the New Jersey State Police’s core values of Honor, Duty, and Fidelity,” Callahan said.

The Trooper of the Year Award is the highest internal honor bestowed by the Division. Recipients receive a red and gold ribbon, symbolizing distinction and service beyond expectation.
