New York City cop heading to prison for drunken car crash on Meadowbrook State Parkway

MINEOLA, N.Y. — A former New York City Police Department detective was sentenced to three to six years in prison for driving drunk and causing a fiery crash on the Meadowbrook State Parkway that seriously injured two women, Nassau County District Attorney Anne T. Donnelly announced Monday.

George Moore, 40, pleaded guilty in November to multiple charges, including aggravated vehicular assault, second-degree assault, third-degree assault, and aggravated driving while intoxicated. The charges stem from an August 4, 2023 crash that occurred while Moore was driving to work in Queens.

Moore was behind the wheel of a 2014 Mercedes with a female passenger when he rear-ended a Jeep Grand Cherokee in the center lane of the parkway. His car struck the center divider, veered into a tree on the right shoulder, flipped, and then caught fire.

“As a member of law enforcement, George Moore had a sworn duty to protect and serve the public, yet he did the opposite,” DA Donnelly said in a statement. “Today’s sentence holds this defendant accountable for his reckless behavior and reinforces the principle that no one is above the law.”

Crash investigation reveals high speed and alcohol use

Moore’s passenger suffered a fractured wrist, fractured foot, and spinal injuries. The driver of the other vehicle sustained injuries to her lower back, shoulder, and knee. Moore himself was also seriously injured, with a broken pelvis, arm, and leg.

All three were taken to Nassau University Medical Center following the collision. Investigators later determined Moore had been drinking at multiple bars in the Rockville Centre area prior to the crash.

The crash occurred while Moore was still employed by the NYPD as a detective. The department has not publicly commented on his current employment status.
