CHESTER, N.Y. — A 48-year-old man and local highway superintendent has been arrested and charged after allegedly shooting a DoorDash driver who was attempting to leave his property after asking for directions, according to New York State Police.

John J. Reilly III, of Valerie Drive, was taken into custody by the State Police Troop F Bureau of Criminal Investigation on Saturday following an investigation into the May 2 non-fatal shooting. Authorities said the victim, a DoorDash driver, had become lost while making a delivery in Reilly’s neighborhood and had approached several homes to get assistance.

The incident occurred at approximately 9:50 p.m. on Friday.

According to investigators, the driver eventually arrived at Reilly’s residence and was told to leave the property.

As the driver attempted to do so, Reilly allegedly fired multiple gunshots at the vehicle, striking the victim once in the back. The driver managed to get to Garnet Health Medical Center and is expected to survive.

Reilly, who is the current Town of Chester Highway Superintendent and a federally licensed firearms dealer, was arrested at SP Monroe. He faces several felony charges, including Assault in the First Degree (Class B), Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Second Degree (Class C), and Criminal Possession of a Firearm (Class E).
