HACKENSACK, NJ – A New York man has been arrested for allegedly helping the suspect in a 2023 Englewood homicide flee the country, Bergen County Prosecutor Mark Musella announced Tuesday.
The suspect, identified as 34-year-old Jorlyn Paulino of New York City, was taken into custody January 30 by investigators from the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crimes Unit and the Englewood Police Department, with assistance from the FBI Safe Streets Task Force and the NYPD. Paulino is charged with third-degree hindering the apprehension of another in connection with the killing of 25-year-old Jason Hidalgo.
The homicide occurred on September 30, 2023, when Englewood police officers responded to a shooting on Mevan Avenue around 5:55 a.m. Officers found Hidalgo suffering from multiple gunshot wounds; he was transported to Englewood Health Hospital & Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
An extensive investigation led detectives to identify Joshua Alvarado as the gunman. Authorities said Alvarado fled the United States within hours of the shooting and was later located in Medellín, Colombia. After international coordination with the U.S. Department of Justice and Colombian National Police, Alvarado was arrested in February 2024 and extradited to the U.S. in December 2025, where he remains jailed in Bergen County.
Paulino accused of aiding fugitive’s border escape
Investigators allege Paulino assisted Alvarado immediately after the killing by driving him to the U.S.–Mexico border, facilitating his escape from the country. Detectives obtained evidence linking Paulino to the getaway and secured a warrant for his arrest.
Paulino was arrested in Manhattan and placed in the custody of the New York City Department of Correction pending extradition to New Jersey.
