East New York woman sentenced to 15 years for violent apartment attack

Brooklyn, NY – A pre-dawn burst of gunfire inside an East New York apartment escalated into a knife attack and left two people and a family dog wounded, a chain of violence that ended Friday with a Brooklyn woman sentenced to 15 years in state prison.

Brooklyn prosecutors said Iescha Gowdy, 34, of East New York, was sentenced by Supreme Court Justice Rhonda Tomlinson to 15 years behind bars followed by five years of post-release supervision. Gowdy previously pleaded guilty to two counts of second-degree attempted murder and one count of first-degree criminal use of a firearm.

The case stems from an early morning incident inside an apartment at 1004 Hegeman Avenue. According to the evidence, a 57-year-old woman, her 39-year-old daughter, and a friend were inside the living room when Gowdy, who had lived with the victim for several months, emerged from her bedroom holding a gun and threatened everyone inside.

Prosecutors said Gowdy fired three shots inside the apartment, striking no one. As the daughter fled down the stairwell, Gowdy followed and struck her across the forehead with the gun. During a struggle, the older woman was able to take the firearm away as a neighbor assisted the victims on a stairwell landing.

Roughly 10 minutes later, Gowdy returned holding two knives, lunged at the 57-year-old woman, and stabbed her in the neck, according to the District Attorney’s Office. As she left the building, prosecutors said Gowdy stabbed the victim’s dog in the abdomen before fleeing.

Both the woman and the dog were treated for their injuries. Gowdy was arrested the following day after an investigation by the NYPD.

The case was prosecuted by the Brooklyn District Attorney’s Red Zone Trial Bureau.
