ICE arrests Salvadoran national convicted of sexual abuse after New York prison release

WASHINGTON, DC – Federal immigration officers have arrested a Salvadoran national with a history of sexual offenses in New York, officials confirmed this week. The suspect, identified as Jose Mendoza, was taken into custody by ICE Buffalo agents on January 5 following his release from the Woodbourne Correctional Facility.

According to ICE, Mendoza was convicted in 2005 of felony criminal sexual acts, sexual abuse, and family neglect, for which he was sentenced to 25 years in state prison. Records show that an immigration judge issued a final order of removal against him on April 28, 2006, while he was serving his sentence.

ICE Acting Director Todd M. Lyons said Mendoza’s arrest underscores the agency’s focus on detaining “the worst of the worst” — noncitizens with serious criminal histories who have defied lawful deportation orders. “When we say we’re arresting the worst of the worst, we’re talking about criminal illegal aliens with histories that show they have no regard for the law, for their communities or this nation,” Lyons said.

ICE moves forward with removal proceedings

Officials stated that Mendoza entered the United States illegally at an unknown time and location. Upon his release from state custody, ICE agents executed the outstanding removal order and transferred him into federal custody pending deportation.

The agency reaffirmed its commitment to prioritizing the arrest and removal of individuals with violent or sexual criminal convictions who pose an ongoing threat to public safety.
