POUGHKEEPSIE, NY – Drivers in Dutchess County were treated to an unusual morning sight Friday when a group of cows wandered onto a roadway, briefly bringing traffic to a standstill before deputies helped herd them to safety.
According to the Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office, the wayward cattle were spotted meandering across a local road in Poughkeepsie, blocking vehicles and causing a temporary traffic hazard. Deputies responded quickly, guiding the animals off the pavement without injury to either livestock or motorists.

In a lighthearted post shared on social media, the Sheriff’s Office joked that the “bovine protesters” had decided it was their road, adding that “everyone, two-legged and four-legged, made it home safely.” The post was accompanied by a clip set to The Coasters’ classic hit “Yakety Yak.”
Deputies praised for calm — and careful — handling
Authorities said animal control was not required, as deputies were able to move the cows with minimal disruption. Officials reminded residents to remain alert on rural and county roads where livestock may occasionally stray from nearby farms.
