A second round of tickets delivered the game’s first top prize
EDGEWOOD, MD — A $27 lottery win at an Edgewood Food Lion became the seed for a much bigger payday when a Maryland woman used the money to buy several In The Green Scratch-Off tickets and uncovered the game’s first $50,000 top prize.
The Harford County player claimed her $50,000 prize Tuesday at Maryland Lottery headquarters in Baltimore.
She told Lottery officials that she typically plays a couple of times each week for entertainment and for the possibility of landing a large prize.
Her winning run started at Food Lion, located at 2250 Hanson Road in Edgewood.
The woman first won $27 on a $2 Scratch-Off ticket. Instead of ending her lottery play there, she used the winnings to purchase several In The Green tickets.
One of those tickets delivered the $50,000 top prize.
The player said she focused on In The Green because it is a relatively new game. The Scratch-Off debuted July 17 with seven $50,000 top prizes available.
Her ticket was the first to claim one of those top prizes, leaving six remaining, according to the Maryland Lottery.
Despite the five-figure score, Lottery officials described the woman’s reaction while claiming the prize as nonchalant.
“I play a couple times a week. It’s just fun,” she told Lottery officials.
She said she plans to save most of the $50,000.
Food Lion will also benefit from the win. The Edgewood grocery store receives a $500 bonus from the Maryland Lottery for selling a top-prize Scratch-Off ticket.
