Six shell casings found after surveillance video captures late-night gunfire on Avon Avenue
NEWARK, NJ – A man walked into the rear lot of a Newark strip mall and fired several shots into the air before fleeing, and nearly six months later police are releasing surveillance images in hopes of identifying the person behind the late-night gunfire.
The shooting occurred at approximately 11:41 p.m. Friday, Feb. 27, in the 100 block of Avon Avenue, according to Newark Public Safety Director Emanuel Miranda Sr.
A ShotSpotter alert initially notified police of gunfire in the area.
Responding officers searched near the loading area of a strip mall and recovered six 9mm shell casings.
Surveillance video obtained during the investigation captured a man walking into the strip mall’s rear parking lot, according to police.

No injuries were reported in the information released by the Newark Department of Public Safety.
The man was described as wearing a dark-colored jacket and pants, light-colored shoes and a backpack.
Police released surveillance images Wednesday and are seeking information that could identify him.
Authorities did not disclose a possible motive for the gunfire or indicate why the man allegedly fired the shots into the air.
