Infants hospitalized with severe injuries that deputies say were not accidental.
NEWARK, NY – A New York couple is facing criminal charges after their 6-week-old twin boys were hospitalized with severe injuries, including brain bleeds, fractures, and burns, in a case that has led to a felony assault charge and the removal of multiple children from the home.
Camron Douglas, 32, and Brittany Spicer, 34, were arrested April 2 following an investigation that began when one of the infants was brought to Newark-Wayne Community Hospital on March 15. Medical staff determined the child had life-threatening injuries and alerted Child Protective Services, prompting the second twin to be brought in for evaluation, where similar injuries were discovered.
Severe injuries flagged as non-accidental
According to court documents obtained by WHAM, both infants suffered significant trauma, including brain bleeds, broken bones, and burns. Authorities stated the injuries were “non-accidental” and occurred over February and March. One of the twins had burns to his face and abdomen when he arrived at the hospital.
Investigators allege Douglas caused the injuries, leading to two felony assault charges. He remains in custody. Spicer was charged with two misdemeanor counts of endangering the welfare of a child and was released from the Wayne County Jail.
Court records indicate Spicer was aware of the injuries but did not immediately seek medical care. On March 15, one of the infants showed “seizure-like symptoms,” but Spicer did not take the child to the hospital until later that afternoon.
Custody changes and court proceedings underway
Both Douglas and Spicer pleaded not guilty to the charges. Spicer appeared in court Wednesday, with her next court date scheduled for May 13. Douglas’s case is expected to be presented to a grand jury, though his next court appearance has not been announced.
Officials confirmed both infants remain hospitalized and are expected to be placed in foster care upon discharge. A 3-year-old child living with Spicer has also been removed from her custody, and she has been ordered to have no contact with the twins.
Douglas was previously on parole following convictions for attempted burglary and assault at the time of his arrest.
