Closures in Morristown and I-78 crash lead list of delays across North Jersey
Newark, NJ – A series of incidents and heavy congestion slowed Monday morning commutes across North Jersey, with a full road closure in Morristown and a truck crash on I-78 among the most significant disruptions. Drivers faced delays on multiple highways and key corridors as the region’s early rush hour intensified.
The most severe issue was a water main break on US 202 in Morristown, reported just after 7 a.m., forcing a complete shutdown in both directions between North Park Place and CR 617/Sussex Avenue. Officials indicated all lanes were closed as crews worked to address the situation.
Major incidents impact highways and local roads
“As of 7:09am, there’s a Watermain break on US 202 in both directions from North of North Park Place to South of CR 617/Sussex Av in Morristown. All lanes closed,” according to traffic reports by NJ511.
On I-78 westbound in Union Township, an overturned dump truck added to the congestion. “As of 7:04am, there’s an Overturned Dump Truck on I-78 westbound East of Exit 13 – NJ 173… 1 right lane of 3 lanes, right shoulder closed,” the report stated.
Additional slowdowns were reported across major routes including I-280, NJ 24, NJ 21, NJ 17, and US 206, with all lanes generally remaining open but traffic moving slowly through peak commute hours.
Tunnel, bridge, and airport traffic add pressure
Commuters heading toward New York City also encountered delays at key crossings. At the Holland Tunnel, eastbound travel times reached approximately 15 minutes from both the New Jersey Turnpike Extension and Route 139.
“As of 8:01am, there are Delays at the Holland Tunnel… The travel time to the New York side is 15 minutes,” officials reported.
On the George Washington Bridge, truck restrictions were in place on the lower level eastbound, though all lanes remained open.
Meanwhile, airport parking constraints added another layer of difficulty for travelers. JFK Terminal 5 parking was reported at full capacity, while Terminal 4 was nearly full at 96% occupancy.
Widespread delays across North Jersey corridors
Delays were reported in several high-traffic areas, including:
- I-280 westbound near the Garden State Parkway in East Orange
- NJ 4 eastbound in Teaneck
- NJ 139 and NJ 21 in Jersey City and Clifton
- NJ 15 in Jefferson Township
- NJ 17 in Lodi and Rochelle Park
Despite the volume of delays, most roadways remained open, with congestion tied largely to volume and earlier incidents.
