TRENTON, N.J. — New Jersey State Senator Troy Singleton (D-Burlington) has formally requested hearings to investigate the ongoing issues plaguing New Jersey Transit’s River Line service. Singleton’s call for action comes in response to persistent delays and cancellations that have severely impacted commuters over the past several weeks.
In a letter addressed to Senate Transportation Committee Chairman Patrick Diegnan, Singleton outlined the frustrations expressed by his constituents, who rely heavily on the River Line for their daily transportation needs. The letter, dated July 25, 2024, highlights a series of issues that have disrupted the service, including the need for customized parts, excessive temperatures, signal malfunctions, grade crossing incidents, medical emergencies, and flooding.
“Over the past several weeks, my office has been contacted by disappointed riders who have been extremely inconvenienced by repeated delays and cancellations, often with little advance notice,” Singleton wrote. He emphasized that while some issues, such as weather-related disruptions, are beyond New Jersey Transit’s control, others are not.
The Senator also pointed out that this is not the first time such issues have arisen, marking the third consecutive summer of significant service interruptions and poor on-time performance. He expressed concern that the River Line, which serves as the sole rail service for commuters in South Jersey, has no alternative routing options, exacerbating the impact of these disruptions.
Singleton’s letter also addressed concerns about the cleanliness and safety of the train cars, adding to the grievances of the affected riders. Despite assurances from New Jersey Transit that efforts are being made to improve reliability, the persistent problems have led to increased frustration among commuters.
“At a time when our State and riders are investing huge sums of money into this agency through a 15% fare hike, and the State Budget included a 2.5% corporate tax to help fund New Jersey Transit, commuters should not have to wake up worrying and guessing whether their train will arrive on time or even at all,” Singleton stated. “The poor service is simply inexcusable.”
In light of these issues, Singleton urged Chairman Diegnan to convene hearings to examine New Jersey Transit’s performance and hold the agency accountable for the ongoing disruptions. He emphasized the need for immediate action to address the systemic problems and ensure reliable service for commuters.
Singleton’s call for hearings underscores the broader challenges faced by New Jersey Transit, as similar service issues have been reported in North Jersey. The Senator’s proactive approach aims to bring attention to the critical need for improvements and accountability within the transit system.
