Nyc school safety officer arrested on weapon and driving charges

Brooklyn, NY – An off-duty New York City employee was taken into custody late Friday after police reported finding multiple weapons during a vehicle stop in the 77th Precinct.

Officials said the arrest occurred at about 2342 hours and involved Dezhanae Rainey, a 24-year-old NYPD School Safety agent.

Rainey was charged with three counts of criminal possession of a weapon along with several vehicle-related offenses, including aggravated unlicensed operation.

The arrest also included charges of consuming alcohol on the street and operating a vehicle without proper safety restraints.

Key Points

  • Off-duty NYPD School Safety agent arrested late Friday
  • Charges include three counts of criminal possession of a weapon
  • Additional counts involve unlicensed operation and alcohol consumption on the street

Weapons charges form core of the case

Police listed three separate weapon possession counts, though officials have not released details about the items recovered. The incident unfolded during a stop in the precinct’s coverage area, where responding officers determined that Rainey was not licensed to operate the vehicle.

Authorities said the vehicle-related charges stemmed from observed violations at the time of the stop. The investigation includes a review of whether Rainey was on city property or using city-issued equipment. Officials did not comment on whether the recovered weapons were loaded or accessible.

Administrative review expected

The NYPD is expected to begin an internal review, standard procedure for arrests involving agency employees. Rainey’s duty status will be evaluated pending the outcome of the case. Court proceedings will determine whether additional charges or administrative actions are warranted. Records indicate the case will be handled through the local criminal court. No injuries were reported during the encounter.
