An Ohio woman thought she had won $5,500 before realizing a $5 play at a local pub had actually landed her a jackpot worth more than $55K.
AKRON, Ohio — A woman carrying a single $5 bill in her purse walked into an Akron pub and walked away more than $55K richer after hitting the jackpot on an Ohio Lottery EZ Play game.
The Ohio Lottery said the winner was visiting Ozzy’s Pub, located at 1390 Brittain Rd. in Akron, when she felt she should try her luck on the lottery machine.
Using the $5 bill she had with her, she purchased a ticket for the EZ Play Lucky Numbers Lucky 5’s game.
Moments later, the machine announced that she was a winner.
At first, the woman believed she had won $5,500.
When she looked more closely at the ticket, she realized she had actually won the $55,847 jackpot.
Lottery officials said the timing of the win was especially meaningful because the woman had recently dealt with health issues and said the prize lifted her spirits.
The winner plans to use the money to replace her roof, make home repairs and possibly travel west to visit her brother.
After 26.75% in state and federal taxes, she will receive $40,907.93.
The Ohio Lottery said it has contributed more than $34 billion to education since 1974.
