What started as a routine ticket purchase ended with a Columbus man winning one of the Ohio Lottery’s biggest scratch-off prizes.
COLUMBUS, OH — A Columbus man is celebrating after a $1 Ohio Lottery scratch-off ticket delivered a prize of $50 a day for 20 years, leaving him stunned as he checked the winning ticket with his family.
The winner said he was sitting in his vehicle with his father and daughter when he scratched the Set for Life ticket.
After revealing the prize, he said he couldn’t believe what he was seeing. His father returned to Pilot Flying J #696 on State Route 37 East in Sunbury to scan the ticket and confirm the win.
When his father came back with the confirmation, the winner said he began shouting, “I can’t believe it!”
Rather than receive the prize as a $365,000 annuity, the winner chose the cash option of $182,500. After the required 26.75% state and federal tax withholdings, he will receive $133,681.25.
The winner, who works as an oversized load escort vehicle driver, said he plans to make improvements to his home, take his children school shopping, enjoy a few family trips and save the remaining money.
According to the Ohio Lottery, it has contributed more than $35 billion to education since 1974.
