Million-dollar ticket sold at NJ Wawa close to expiring

$1.3 million Jersey Cash 5 jackpot still unclaimed in Monmouth County

TRENTON, NJ — A Jersey Cash 5 ticket worth more than $1.3 million remains unclaimed nearly a year after it was sold at a Monmouth County Wawa, lottery officials said Thursday.

The winning ticket, valued at $1,300,245, was purchased at the Wawa located at 3303 Route 9 in Freehold. It matched the winning numbers drawn on November 25, 2024. Players have one year from the draw date to claim winnings, meaning this prize will expire in late November if not redeemed.

New Jersey Lottery Executive Director James Carey urged players to double-check old tickets. “We have several ways our players can verify if they are winners. More than once, I’ve seen players come to us after a period of time saying they won a prize after finding a misplaced ticket,” Carey said.

Earlier this year, a Mercer County player discovered a four-month-old Mega Millions ticket worth $1 million. Officials say other large winning tickets are also nearing expiration, including a $150,000 Jersey Cash 5 ticket sold in Belleville and a $50,000 Powerball ticket sold in Paramus.

Players can check their tickets at any lottery retailer, online, or through the official New Jersey Lottery mobile app.

Cranford man hits $1 million jackpot in Cash 4 Life lottery drawing

Cranford, NJ — A Union County resident is waking up a millionaire after purchasing a winning Cash 4 Life lottery ticket that matched five numbers, missing only the elusive Cash Ball, to claim a $1 million cash prize in Thursday night’s drawing.

The winning ticket was sold at Krauser’s convenience store at 1198 Raritan Road in Cranford, with the lucky numbers being 40, 43, 49, 54, and 60. The Cash Ball number, which was not matched, was 04. The player opted for the lump sum second-tier prize of $1 million. Krauser’s will receive a $10,000 bonus for selling the ticket.

This marks the fifth time in 2025 that the game has produced a second-tier million-dollar winner, and the second time in recent months that a Union County player has claimed the prize. In May, another Union County ticket hit all five numbers and the Cash Ball, securing the game’s top prize with a $7 million cash value. August also saw $1 million winners in both Union and Bergen counties, with Bergen repeating again in September.

Cash 4 Life, a multistate lottery available in nine states, offers two life-changing jackpots for a $2 ticket. The top prize pays $1,000 a day for life, while the second-tier prize offers $1,000 a week for life—both of which can be claimed in a single lump sum of $7 million or $1 million, respectively. Daily drawings are held at approximately 9 p.m.

The game includes seven additional prize tiers, ranging from $2 to $2,500. Players can also opt into the “Doubler” feature for an extra $1, which doubles all prize amounts except for the two top-tier prizes.

Maryland Police Chief Identified as Cop in Deadly Shooting

by Shore News Network October 3, 2025
By Shore News Network

Baltimore, MD – State officials have released the names of both the man killed and the officer involved in a fatal police shooting in Riverdale on Tuesday.

The decedent has been identified as 45-year-old Tesfa Leith of Riverdale, according to the Independent Investigations Division (IID) of the Maryland Office of the Attorney General. The officer who discharged his weapon was David Morris, Chief of the Cheverly Police Department. Morris has served as CPD chief for two years following 38 years of prior law enforcement service.

Investigators say the incident unfolded around 4:55 p.m. on the 6600 block of Greenland Street as officers from Cheverly and Prince George’s County responded to a stabbing report. On scene, police encountered Leith carrying two knives. Despite repeated commands to drop the weapons, he advanced toward officers.

A PGPD officer deployed a taser, but it was ineffective. Chief Morris then fired his weapon, striking Leith. He was pronounced dead at the scene after emergency aid efforts failed.

Two knives were recovered, and no officers were injured.

By law, the IID does not typically investigate incidents involving police chiefs. However, the Prince George’s County State’s Attorney’s Office referred the case to the IID citing independence and public confidence. The investigation remains active.

Witnesses with information are urged to contact IID investigators at 410-576-7070 or [email protected].

A deadly confrontation in Riverdale has now entered the hands of state investigators.

Riverhead, NY – A Suffolk County jury has convicted a 61-year-old man of murder for fatally shooting a 23-year-old father-to-be during a violent confrontation outside a family home, prosecutors announced Thursday.

District Attorney Raymond A. Tierney said Brent Henry was found guilty of Murder in the Second Degree and two counts of Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Second Degree in the killing of Ines Reyes, who was just weeks away from welcoming his first child.

According to trial evidence, the violence began on August 18, 2023, when Henry and Reyes fought inside the Bellport home Reyes shared with his girlfriend, who is also Henry’s niece. Reyes and his girlfriend later went to a house on Amsterdam Avenue in East Patchogue to be with relatives. Henry arrived soon after, confronting Reyes outside the residence. A second fight broke out before Henry retrieved a .40 caliber handgun from his vehicle and fired multiple shots, striking Reyes in front of his girlfriend.

Reyes was rushed to Long Island Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Henry was arrested the following day.

The jury delivered its verdict on October 2 after a trial before Acting Supreme Court Justice Richard I. Horowitz. Henry faces up to 25 years to life in prison when sentenced on November 7.

New Jersey Traffic Report: Crashes and Delays and Spots to Avoid if you Can

by Shore News Network October 3, 2025
By Shore News Network

Newark, NJ – Rush hour drivers across New Jersey faced a messy commute Friday morning with multiple crashes, disabled vehicles, and heavy backups leading into New York City.

At 7:34 a.m., a crash on the New Jersey Turnpike at Interchange 12 in Carteret left one toll lane blocked, slowing traffic entering from the Carteret-Rahway corridor. Just minutes earlier, a disabled vehicle on the Eastern Spur near Interchange 17E in Secaucus partially blocked an exit ramp to the Lincoln Tunnel, adding to delays in Hudson County.

Police activity also disrupted traffic in Elizabeth, where a lane closure on North Avenue at Kapkowski Road caused eastbound slowdowns. Farther south, I-295 drivers were hit with two incidents: a crash near Exit 40 in Mount Laurel that closed the right shoulder and a downed streetlight near Exit 32 in Cherry Hill that left all lanes open but required crews on scene.

Commuters heading into Manhattan encountered long waits at all major crossings. At 7:32 a.m., travel times through both the Lincoln Tunnel’s center and south tubes were reported at 20 minutes from Turnpike Exit 16E. The Holland Tunnel showed similar delays at about 20 minutes from Exit 14C and 25 minutes from Route 139 in Jersey City. The George Washington Bridge was the most congested, with travel times of 25 minutes on the lower level and 30 minutes on the upper level from I-80 to the Alexander Hamilton Bridge.

Volume-related delays added to the congestion across the state. The Turnpike Eastern and Western Spurs both reported two-mile backups approaching Newark, while the Garden State Parkway saw slowdowns in Bloomfield and East Orange. NJ 21 in Newark, NJ 208 in Fair Lawn, NJ 495 in North Bergen, and the Pulaski Skyway into Jersey City all reported heavy but moving traffic.

Drivers are being urged to allow extra time on the roads as congestion builds heading into mid-morning.

New Jersey Democrat Wants to Seize President Trump’s Bedminster Golf Course Over Federal Shutdown

by Shore News Network October 3, 2025
By Shore News Network

Trenton, NJ – Democrats in New Jersey are escalating their clash with the Trump administration, floating the idea of seizing President Donald Trump’s golf club in Bedminster as payback for what they describe as retaliation against the state’s federal funding cuts and government shutdown.

Kate Brennan, a Democrat running for the New Jersey State Assembly says the state should take Trump’s golf course by force.

The proposal comes as tensions mount over federal funding cuts tied to vital infrastructure projects, including the Gateway Tunnel project.

The push mirrors the Democrat party’s separate and highly charged attack against private land ownership in Cranbury Township, where local leaders are moving to take the historic Henry family farm through eminent domain to meet state-mandated affordable housing quotas.

That case has drawn national attention, with critics arguing the government is overreaching by targeting private property with deep historical roots.

At the center of the latest controversy is Trump National Golf Club Bedminster, a sprawling property in Somerset County where the former president has frequently spent time.

Brennan says that if Washington cuts money approved for New Jersey commuters, the state should consider extraordinary measures — including using eminent domain to take over Trump’s land and repurpose it for affordable housing.

“This is not how the government is supposed to work. We pay federal taxes but get a President who sees us as the enemy and takes away our own money as retaliation. This has to stop,” Brennan said in a statement, accusing Trump of prioritizing politics over residents’ livelihoods.

One thing is clear in New Jersey. If Democrats want your private land, they’re going to take your private land.

Investigators said Marie Dibella, employed at a Toms River law firm, used her position to access the victim’s personal and financial information. Between January 2023 and August 2024, Dibella allegedly wrote checks to herself, to cash, and to family members using the victim’s funds.

The Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office Economic Crime Squad began investigating in August 2024, uncovering the alleged scheme. On September 26, 2025, Dibella was formally charged with theft by unlawful taking.

Dibella surrendered to Berkeley Township Police Headquarters on September 30. She was then transported to the Ocean County Jail before being released pending future appearances in Ocean County Superior Court.

Prosecutor Bradley D. Billhimer credited the Economic Crime Squad for its work on the case.

The charges are accusations, and Dibella is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.

Newark teen arrested in connection with two smoke shop burglaries

NEWARK, DE — A 17-year-old boy has been charged in connection with two overnight burglaries at the same Newark smoke shop last week that each resulted in thousands of dollars in stolen merchandise, Delaware State Police said Thursday.

The first break-in happened around 4:00 a.m. on September 23 at The Smoke Shop in Salem Village Square. Troopers determined that a masked suspect forced entry and stole electronic cigarettes and related products valued at roughly $2,000.

Just one day later, on September 24 at the same time in the morning, the business was hit again. Investigators said the suspect used similar methods to break in and stole another $2,000 worth of merchandise.

Detectives later identified a 17-year-old male from Newark as the suspect and obtained a warrant for his arrest. On September 30, troopers took him into custody and transported him to Troop 2 for processing.

The teen was charged with two counts each of wearing a disguise during the commission of a felony, burglary in the third degree, possession of burglar tools, theft, and criminal mischief. He was arraigned in New Castle County Family Court and released on a $5,000 unsecured bond.

Woodbridge man arrested for abduction after two juveniles escape hotel room in North Stafford

STAFFORD, VA — A 54-year-old man is behind bars after two juveniles escaped from a hotel room in North Stafford early Wednesday and told an off-duty officer they had been kidnapped, authorities said.

At about 6:54 a.m. on October 1, deputies responded to the Mine Road Commuter Lot after the two juveniles flagged down the officer for help. Deputies confirmed their identities and learned that one of the juveniles had been reported missing. The pair led investigators to the Quality Inn on Greenspring Drive, pointing out the room where they said they had been held.

Deputies detained a man inside the room and launched an investigation. Detectives determined the suspect, later identified as Tyronne McDaniel of Woodbridge, was a stranger who had first come into contact with the juveniles in Baltimore. He then transported them to the Stafford hotel, where they were able to flee and find help.

Inside the room, detectives said they found suspected controlled substances along with items related to prostitution.

McDaniel has been charged with two counts of abduction, possession of controlled substances, and pandering, which is classified as a human trafficking offense. He is being held at the Rappahannock Regional Jail without bond.

Both juveniles were placed in the care of Child Protective Services and are being reunited with their families. The investigation is ongoing.

New Jersey’s Forced Affordable Housing Mandate on Small Towns at Risk With Ciattarelli, Championed by Sherrill

By Shore News Network

Cranbury, NJ – Republican gubernatorial nominee Jack Ciattarelli declared Tuesday that New Jersey’s long-standing Mount Laurel housing doctrine has failed the state, vowing to replace it with a plan that halts suburban sprawl, reinvests in cities, and protects the environment.

Ciattarelli argued that the court-imposed doctrine, which requires towns to allow affordable housing, has led to overdevelopment in communities unequipped to handle high-density projects. He said the result has been the loss of farmland and open space, more traffic congestion, worsening stormwater issues, rising property taxes, and damage to wildlife habitats.

“The current state-mandated development scheme is destroying open space, increasing pollution from more idling cars on already congested roads, leading to more local flooding, and driving up property taxes due to endless legal fees and additional local services,” Ciattarelli said, noting that both Democratic and Republican mayors are challenging the policy in court.

Central to his proposal, dubbed a plan to “Put the Garden Back Into the Garden State,” is restoring Regional Contribution Agreements (RCAs) — previously struck down by the courts — to direct housing obligations and investment toward urban centers and transit hubs. Ciattarelli said growth should follow state labor data and be tied to where jobs are located, not forced into rural towns with few opportunities.

“These reforms must come via a real legislative solution – not from a judge,” he said, warning that if lawmakers do not act, he would push for a constitutional amendment and use executive orders to block unsuitable high-density projects.

Ciattarelli also pledged to impose impact fees on new warehouse developments so that developers, not taxpayers, shoulder the cost of infrastructure improvements.

His opponent, Democrat Mikie Sherrill, has backed policies that mirror Gov. Phil Murphy’s support for affordable housing mandates, which Ciattarelli said force towns to cut down forests and build high-density housing.
