14 New Jersey Prison Guards Who Allegedly Abused Female Inmates See Indictments Dismissed

by Shore News Network October 3, 2025
By Shore News Network

Trenton, NJ – New Jersey Corrections Commissioner Victoria L. Kuhn, Esq., voiced deep frustration after a court dismissed indictments against 14 staff members accused of abusing incarcerated women at the Edna Mahan Correctional Facility. The ruling, issued Thursday, ended the criminal case but drew sharp criticism from state prison leadership.

“The events of January 11, 2021, were unconscionable,” Kuhn said in a statement. “The clearly documented actions and behavior of staff that night were horrendous and will never be tolerated. Yesterday’s decision has left me profoundly disappointed, and I urge the Office of the Attorney General to pursue every legal avenue necessary to bring justice to the victims.”

Kuhn pledged that, regardless of the outcome in court, the Department of Corrections will move forward with its own internal review once jurisdiction is returned. The agency’s Special Investigations Division will conduct a full administrative probe and issue disciplinary action, “up to and including removal from employment,” for those responsible.

A Superior Court judge threw out the indictment Thursday against former officers and staff, citing delays, mistakes and what he called “prosecutorial mismanagement” by the state.

In a 60-page ruling, Judge Christopher Garrenger dismissed the case with prejudice, barring prosecutors from refiling the charges but staying his order for 45 days to allow time for an appeal.

The indictment had accused all 14 defendants of official misconduct and records tampering, with 11 also facing second-degree aggravated assault charges.

The commissioner also pointed to reforms implemented in the years since the Edna Mahan scandal first drew national attention. Those measures include mandatory body-worn cameras for all custody staff, expanded surveillance to eliminate blind spots, trauma-informed training, and cultural reforms specific to the facility. Kuhn said federal monitors have recognized the progress, noting that nearly half of the federal Consent Decree has been dismissed for sustained compliance.

In addition, planning continues for a new facility to replace Edna Mahan, which state officials described as outdated and structurally deteriorating. Development is underway with architects and engineers already in place, and the project remains on schedule and within budget.

Kuhn vowed that reform efforts will not be derailed by the court’s decision. “I am determined to ensure this progress continues, and I will not tolerate conduct that undermines the dignity and trust placed in this Department,” she said.

Even without criminal convictions, the state’s top corrections official made clear the fight for accountability is not over.

Feds move to force Oregon counties to hand over records on violent criminal aliens

by Shore News Network October 3, 2025
By Shore News Network

Portland, OR – Federal prosecutors are seeking court action against four Oregon counties after immigration agents said local officials released 10 violent felons into the community instead of turning them over for removal proceedings. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Oregon and the Justice Department’s Civil Division filed a petition to enforce administrative subpoenas issued by ICE Homeland Security Investigations Seattle. The subpoenas demand information from Clackamas, Washington, Multnomah and Marion Counties to locate individuals ICE says should have been transferred for deportation.

The petition follows years of county officials disregarding immigration detainers, allowing offenders with convictions for rape, assault, kidnapping and child exploitation to reenter communities after serving prison sentences. Federal authorities say the information sought will help track down the 10 individuals and move forward with their removal cases.

HSI Seattle acting Special Agent in Charge April Miller criticized Oregon’s sanctuary policies, stating that releasing “the worst criminal aliens” forced federal officers to pursue them in public, creating risks for both law enforcement and residents.

The 10 individuals highlighted by ICE include:

  • A man convicted of manslaughter after prior assault and criminal mistreatment charges, released in 2023.
  • A sex offender convicted of multiple rapes and sodomy involving a minor under 16, later found guilty of nine counts of sexual abuse, released in 2022.
  • A man convicted of kidnapping, burglary, robbery and assault, released this year.
  • A felon convicted of assault, weapons offenses and attempted burglary, released in 2023.
  • A sex offender convicted of abusing two children under 14, released in 2022.
  • A rapist who admitted using or threatening a weapon during his offense, released in 2023.
  • Another convicted rapist sentenced to 10 years in prison, released in 2023.
  • A sex offender convicted of raping a child under 12 and sexually abusing a child under 14, released in 2022.
  • A man convicted of rape and sexual abuse in 2008 and again in 2016, released in 2022.
  • An individual convicted of federal document fraud before being sentenced in Oregon for robbery and kidnapping, released in 2023.

According to ICE, each of the men has served lengthy prison terms in Oregon and remains subject to removal under U.S. immigration law.

Federal prosecutors now ask the court to compel Oregon counties to comply with the subpoenas, marking the latest clash between federal immigration enforcement and local sanctuary policies.

Superintendent arrested as ICE reveals long criminal past of illegal alien

by Shore News Network October 3, 2025
By Shore News Network

Des Moines, IA – Immigration and Customs Enforcement revealed new details about Ian Andre Roberts, the superintendent of Des Moines Public Schools, who was arrested Sept. 26 after fleeing officers and abandoning his vehicle during a confrontation. ICE officials said Roberts, who is in the country illegally, was caught hiding in a wooded area about 200 meters away after fleeing the scene. A loaded Glock pistol, a fixed-blade hunting knife and $3,000 in cash were recovered from his abandoned vehicle. On Oct. 2, federal prosecutors charged him with being an illegal alien in possession of firearms.

Roberts’ arrest drew attention not only because of his leadership position in Iowa’s largest school district, but also because of a lengthy criminal record spanning nearly three decades and multiple states. According to ICE, his history includes drug charges, weapons offenses and immigration violations, along with a removal order that was issued in absentia in 2024.

Superintendent arrested as ICE reveals long criminal past of illegal alien

His documented criminal record includes narcotics charges in New York in 1996, reckless driving in Maryland in 2012, and multiple firearm offenses beginning in 2020. In 2022, he was convicted in Pennsylvania for unlawful possession of a loaded firearm. His most recent arrest occurred while serving as superintendent in Des Moines, where ICE agents say he attempted to evade capture before being tracked down with help from Iowa State Patrol.

Roberts’ immigration file shows repeated attempts to gain permanent residency through multiple green card applications, all of which were denied. Records show he entered the United States multiple times beginning in 1994 on visitor and student visas, and later sought employment authorization documents that allowed him to remain in the country temporarily. In May 2024, an immigration judge in Dallas ordered him removed, and in April this year, his motion to reopen the case was denied.

Despite his immigration history, Roberts secured the top leadership role overseeing Des Moines schools until his arrest last week. ICE officials emphasized that Roberts should never have been in a position of authority within the school system given his immigration and criminal background.

The case is now moving forward in federal court, with Roberts facing firearms charges as his immigration removal order remains active.

From superintendent to fugitive, Roberts’ fall stunned Iowa’s capital.

Ex-wife’s birthday delivers $50K win for longtime lottery player

Maryland man hits $50K lottery jackpot using ex-wife’s birthday after 40 years of playing

Deale, MD — After four decades of playing the Maryland Lottery with modest success, one Anne Arundel County man finally struck gold this week — landing a $50,000 Pick 5 prize with numbers inspired by none other than his ex-wife’s birthday.

The longtime lottery player claimed his winnings at Maryland Lottery headquarters on Monday, describing it as his first “brag-worthy” score since the 1990s. The winning numbers — 2-6-2-1-2 — were a variation of a birthday he’s been using on and off for years, and this time, they delivered.

“I’ve had some wins over the years, but nothing worth bragging about until now,” the player said, adding that the win “felt overdue.”

The Anne Arundel man, whose identity was not disclosed by lottery officials, said he’s only shared the news with his children — and promised them an especially memorable Christmas. For decades, he’s alternated playing numbers tied to family members’ birthdays, including his children and former spouse, in hopes of hitting it big.

He purchased the lucky ticket at Park’s Drive-In Liquors, located at 454 East Bay Front Road in Deale. The store will receive a $500 bonus for selling the winning ticket.

While he didn’t reveal specific plans for the money, the winner made it clear that the windfall brings a sense of relief and satisfaction after decades of dedication to the game.

Son convicted in brutal murder-for-hire plot that left father dead in Brick Township

Brick Township man guilty in savage murder-for-hire of father

Brick, NJ — A twisted murder-for-hire plot shattered a quiet Jersey Shore neighborhood after a Brick Township man was convicted Wednesday of orchestrating the brutal killing of his own father in exchange for cash—ending a years-long investigation that pulled in more than a dozen law enforcement agencies.

Mark J. Austin, 34, was found guilty of murder and unlawful possession of a weapon in connection with the death of his father, Mark Richard Austin, who was discovered bludgeoned to death inside his Acorn Drive home on a Saturday in early September. Prosecutors said Austin promised money to co-defendant Jeray Melton, 34, of Salem City, to carry out the killing, which the jury ruled was a calculated hit-for-pay, triggering a mandatory sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole.

The verdict was reached after a nearly five-week-long trial before Judge Guy P. Ryan in Ocean County Superior Court. Austin is set to be sentenced on December 12.

The body of 61-year-old Mark Richard Austin was found on September 7 with signs of blunt force trauma. Prosecutors said the evidence pointed to a chilling murder conspiracy between Austin and Melton, who were arrested just six days later and have remained behind bars since.

Investigators pieced together the murder plot using digital evidence, witness testimony, and forensic analysis. Prosecutors said Austin and Melton had discussed and planned the killing in advance, with Melton entering the home and carrying out the fatal assault in exchange for a promised payout.

Austin was formally indicted on October 7, 2021, on charges of murder, unlawful possession of a weapon, and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose.

Melton took a plea deal in 2020, admitting to aggravated manslaughter and is awaiting sentencing. Prosecutors did not disclose the details of the plea agreement but confirmed that Melton’s cooperation was part of the state’s case.

Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley D. Billhimer called the plot “calculated and cold-blooded” and said the jury’s decision brought justice for the victim’s family after years of painstaking investigative work.

More than 10 local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies were involved in the investigation, including the FBI, NJ State Police, multiple local police departments, and the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office.

Austin will spend the rest of his life behind bars if Judge Ryan imposes the mandatory sentence in December.

Cecil County woman hits $100K with twin Pick 5 lottery tickets

North East, MD — A Cecil County woman hit the jackpot twice in one night after unknowingly buying two identical Pick 5 tickets—each worth $50,000—in the September 30 drawing, Maryland Lottery officials confirmed.

The longtime player typically buys just one ticket per draw but walked away with two identical plays for the same combination: 78048. When the number hit, she won both top prizes, totaling $100,000.

By Shore News Network

Marlton, NJ – A brazen daylight robbery at a Sunglass Hut in Evesham Township ended with an employee sprayed with bear repellent and more than $10,000 worth of luxury eyewear stolen, police said.

Officers were called to the store on South Route 73 around 12:43 p.m. Monday after two women entered wearing hats and face coverings and began swiping sunglasses from display racks. When a young employee tried to call for help, one of the suspects blasted her in the face with bear spray before fleeing.

Detectives determined the thieves made off with between 18 and 20 pairs of high-value sunglasses. Evidence collected on the scene led investigators to identify one suspect as Allesha Taylor-Jones, 29, of Delaware.

Evesham police worked with Delaware State Police to track her down, and she was arrested and found carrying evidence linking her to the robbery. Taylor-Jones is being held in Delaware awaiting extradition to New Jersey, where she faces charges including first-degree robbery, aggravated assault, weapons offenses, and theft.

The second suspect has not yet been identified, and investigators are urging anyone with information to contact Evesham police.

The bear spray attack left more than eyewear missing from the shelves—it left a community on alert.

$1.3 million Jersey Cash 5 jackpot still unclaimed in Monmouth County

TRENTON, NJ — A Jersey Cash 5 ticket worth more than $1.3 million remains unclaimed nearly a year after it was sold at a Monmouth County Wawa, lottery officials said Thursday.

The winning ticket, valued at $1,300,245, was purchased at the Wawa located at 3303 Route 9 in Freehold. It matched the winning numbers drawn on November 25, 2024. Players have one year from the draw date to claim winnings, meaning this prize will expire in late November if not redeemed.

New Jersey Lottery Executive Director James Carey urged players to double-check old tickets. “We have several ways our players can verify if they are winners. More than once, I’ve seen players come to us after a period of time saying they won a prize after finding a misplaced ticket,” Carey said.

Earlier this year, a Mercer County player discovered a four-month-old Mega Millions ticket worth $1 million. Officials say other large winning tickets are also nearing expiration, including a $150,000 Jersey Cash 5 ticket sold in Belleville and a $50,000 Powerball ticket sold in Paramus.

Players can check their tickets at any lottery retailer, online, or through the official New Jersey Lottery mobile app.

  • A $1.3 million Jersey Cash 5 ticket sold in Freehold has not been claimed nearly one year later
  • The winning ticket was sold at a Wawa on Route 9 and expires in late November

Cranford man hits $1 million jackpot in Cash 4 Life lottery drawing

Cranford, NJ — A Union County resident is waking up a millionaire after purchasing a winning Cash 4 Life lottery ticket that matched five numbers, missing only the elusive Cash Ball, to claim a $1 million cash prize in Thursday night’s drawing.

The winning ticket was sold at Krauser’s convenience store at 1198 Raritan Road in Cranford, with the lucky numbers being 40, 43, 49, 54, and 60. The Cash Ball number, which was not matched, was 04. The player opted for the lump sum second-tier prize of $1 million. Krauser’s will receive a $10,000 bonus for selling the ticket.

This marks the fifth time in 2025 that the game has produced a second-tier million-dollar winner, and the second time in recent months that a Union County player has claimed the prize. In May, another Union County ticket hit all five numbers and the Cash Ball, securing the game’s top prize with a $7 million cash value. August also saw $1 million winners in both Union and Bergen counties, with Bergen repeating again in September.

Cash 4 Life, a multistate lottery available in nine states, offers two life-changing jackpots for a $2 ticket. The top prize pays $1,000 a day for life, while the second-tier prize offers $1,000 a week for life—both of which can be claimed in a single lump sum of $7 million or $1 million, respectively. Daily drawings are held at approximately 9 p.m.

The game includes seven additional prize tiers, ranging from $2 to $2,500. Players can also opt into the “Doubler” feature for an extra $1, which doubles all prize amounts except for the two top-tier prizes.

To play, participants choose five numbers from 1 through 60 and a single Cash Ball from 1 through 4.

Key Points

  • A Union County player won $1 million in Thursday’s Cash 4 Life lottery drawing by matching five numbers but not the Cash Ball.
  • The winning ticket was sold at Krauser’s in Cranford, which will receive a $10,000 retailer bonus.
  • This is the fifth $1 million Cash 4 Life winner this year, and the second in Union County.
