Man wanted for questioning after gunfire hits occupied car in Newark

Newark, NJ — Police are searching for a 27-year-old Irvington man wanted for questioning in connection with a July shooting in Newark that involved gunfire aimed at an occupied vehicle, according to officials.

Patrick Roberts is being sought by detectives following a shooting that took place on July 21 at approximately 11:01 p.m. The department’s ShotSpotter detection system alerted officers to gunfire in the 600 block of South 10th Street. Responding officers recovered a single 9mm shell casing on Brenner Street near South 10th.

Investigators from the Major Crimes Shooting Response Team reviewed surveillance footage and identified an individual firing a handgun at a silver Toyota Camry that was occupied at the time of the shooting. The vehicle was struck, but police have not reported any injuries.

Roberts has not been charged, but is wanted for questioning as detectives continue to investigate the incident. Newark Public Safety Director Emanuel Miranda, Sr. is asking for the public’s help in locating Roberts or providing information relevant to the case.
