Newark police say thieves can sell the stolen parts online while leaving drivers with $1,000-plus replacement bills

NEWARK, NJ – Drivers of late-model Honda and Acura vehicles are being warned about a nationwide rise in radar sensor thefts, with Newark police saying thieves are targeting parts that can fetch up to $150 online while costing vehicle owners more than $1,000 to replace.

The Newark Department of Public Safety issued the warning Wednesday, urging owners of the two vehicle brands to take additional precautions.

The targeted radar sensors are components of driver-assistance systems designed to alert motorists to an impending collision.

Police said stolen sensors can be resold online for approximately $100 to $150.

For the vehicle owner, however, replacing the stolen equipment can cost more than $1,000.

The department did not provide figures on the number of radar sensor thefts reported in Newark or identify specific Honda and Acura models targeted.

Police recommend added security

Newark police advised drivers to park in well-lit areas and consider installing motion-sensor security cameras.

Owners can also use anti-theft brackets designed to cover the sensors and tamper-resistant screws to make the components more difficult to remove.

Anyone who wants to report criminal activity can contact the Newark Police Division’s 24-hour Crime Stopper tip line at 1-877-NWK-TIPS, or 1-877-695-8477.

Police said anonymous Crime Stopper tips are confidential and could result in a reward.
