Three juveniles arrested after 13 commercial burglaries
Springfield, MA — Three juveniles were arrested Thursday in connection with a string of 13 commercial burglaries and related offenses after officers tracked a stolen vehicle they were using, authorities said.
Investigators charged two 16-year-old males and a 14-year-old male with multiple commercial burglaries and theft-related offenses across several police districts, including the Northern District (Hampden area), the Central District and the Northeast District. The suspects face counts tied to commercial break-ins and one count related to a stolen vehicle.
On September 26 at about 2:00 a.m., members of the Regional Auto Theft Taskforce (RATT) located a vehicle that had been reported stolen from the Western District the previous day. Officers observed the three juveniles gain access to the vehicle and drive away. Additional RATT officers, assisted by FOXTROT, responded and apprehended all three suspects at the scene.
The juveniles were transported to the Juvenile Justice Center and formally charged with multiple counts of motor vehicle theft, burglary and a handgun violation. Two of the suspects were released on monitoring and one was detained pending further proceedings. Detectives said they are continuing to investigate additional crimes that may involve the suspects.
Police records show the 14-year-old and one of the 16-year-olds have a combined total of 12 prior arrests, including charges for stolen auto, robbery and burglary. Officials did not release the names of the juveniles or further identifying details because of their ages.
Prosecutors and juvenile justice officials will review the charges as the investigation proceeds. No further information about recovered property or alleged victims’ losses was released.
