Gunfire erupts as suspect allegedly opens fire on Boston police before capture

Police say a 20-year-old suspect fired at officers during a foot chase before he was arrested and a ghost gun was recovered.

BOSTON, MA — A man is facing multiple charges after police say he opened fire on Boston officers during a foot pursuit in Dorchester before being captured following a neighborhood search.

According to the Boston Police Department, the incident began at approximately 9:11 p.m. on Wednesday, July 15, near Devon Street and Laredo Street.

Officers from the Mattapan and Roxbury districts were responding to a report of an officer in trouble when officers already at the scene radioed that they were chasing a suspect on foot.

During the pursuit, police said the suspect fired a gun in the direction of the officers before fleeing through backyards between Devon Street and Stanwood Street.

Multiple police units responded and established a perimeter as officers searched the area.

Investigators said the suspect was spotted on Stanwood Street, where he again tried to flee by jumping fences and running through the rear of several homes before he was arrested behind a residence on Stanwood Street.

Police identified the suspect as 20-year-old Rasiel Joel Carbuccia of Jamaica Plain.

Following the arrest, both officers involved in the initial confrontation were evaluated and transported to a local hospital. Police said neither officer suffered injuries during the incident.

During a search of the suspect’s escape route, officers recovered a discarded ghost gun behind a property on Devon Street. Investigators said the firearm had no serial number and contained one spent shell casing lodged in the chamber along with 16 live rounds in a large-capacity magazine.

Police also recovered a projectile from the roadway and found ballistic damage to the windshield of a Boston police cruiser.

Authorities said Carbuccia was already the subject of an active warrant from Roxbury District Court for assault with a dangerous weapon.

He is expected to face multiple charges, including carrying a firearm without a license, carrying a loaded firearm without a license, assault with a dangerous weapon, possession of a large-capacity firearm, possession of a covert or undetectable firearm, discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a building, possession of ammunition without an FID card, and trespassing.

The charges are allegations, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
